personality types

not sure why, but i woke up way to early this morning (430am) and have just been reading a ton of stuff online since then. no particular topic, just anything and everything that seemed interesting. so now it’s on the topic of personality types… i’ve always found psychology to be a very intriguing area of study.

presidential debate #3

it was clear that obama won the debate last night by a landslide as mccain came out kicking and screaming like an erratic senile old man while obama continued to keep his cool the entire time. i don’t need to do much more explaining as this image (NOT photoshopped) says it all:

blog action day 2008: poverty

today is blog action day with a focus this year on poverty, and thousands of blogs around the world are uniting to spread the word about this issue and the sad reality of poverty affecting a large populace.at the time of this post, approximately 10,700 blogs are participating today with an estimated audience of 11.5 million people. impressive!

i admit, this year has been a rather stressful one for me financially. underestimated taxes for 2007, sudden unexpected expenses and such have popped up off and on throughout the year. not only that, but with the state of things not only in america, but also across the world, my anxiety for the future of society has been at one of its highest levels ever. bringing awareness to the issues is the first step in making a difference in the lives of those affected, and that is the primary cause of blog action day.

here in america, especially with the current economic and financial crisis, it’s easy for us to lose sight that we still have one of the highest standards of living in the world. so even if your personal finances have been greatly affected by this crisis, think about this: if you have food to eat, clothes to wear, shelter and a place to sleep then you are richer than 75% of the world already. have money in your wallet or spare change lying around in a jar at home? then you’re in the top 8%.

according to these sources:

70% of the world’s poor are women.

1 in 5 children in the developing world does not have access to safe water, and 1 in 7 has no access whatsoever to essential health services.

Every year 11 million children die — most under the age of five — and more than 6 million from completely preventable causes like malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia.

In 2002, there were 815 million hungry people in the world. While this number has been declining slightly worldwide, hunger has increased greatly in South Asia and Africa.

In developing nations, more than a quarter of children under age five are malnourished.

Poor nutrition and calorie deficiencies cause nearly one in three people to die prematurely or have disabilities, according to the World Health Organization.

The World Bank estimates that more than a billion people live on less than US$1.00 (one dollar) per day.

At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day.

Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.

Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn’t happen.

In 2005, the wealthiest 20% of the world accounted for 76.6% of total private consumption. The poorest fifth just 1.5%.

1.6 billion people — a quarter of humanity — live without electricity, primarily in southern and eastern Asia and Africa.

however, poverty does not merely end with consumption and materialism but extends well into our character and judgment–letting our morals go astray rather than focusing on what really matters in life and regaining one’s perspective. volunteering in your community to help those less fortunate is one of the best ways to get involved in this manner.

ways you can help

there are many great resources online that can act as a starting point for getting involved in the fight against poverty. you can lend money to entrepreneurs in a developing country, donate to beneficial charities, get involved, or increase education and technology in developing nations. for more resources in ways you can help end poverty, please refer to the wide range of resources provided by blog action day. also be sure to read blog action day’s list of 88 ways to DO something about poverty.

the world according to republicans

in response to a “talking points memo” article discussing sarah palin’s recent criticism of obama’s not-so-close relationship with former weatherman bill ayers, the first commenter on the article’s respective digg page pretty much nails it:

everything sucks

it’s been a while since i’ve taken the time to post something here ever since twitter has become my blogging method of choice. but with everything that’s been going on recently there’s just too much on my mind that i need to dump some of it out somewhere.

first off: the election. six months ago i had so much hope that this was going to be an election of a different nature. people were sick of the way things had been going and were ready for change. no longer were americans going to sit by and let the government fuck up their lives. people actually cared, and it felt like there was no way in hell republicans had a chance at winning. it seemed like the democrats had several really good candidates. there was so much promise, so much hope.

now, a month away from the election reality could not be father from that vision. this election is wrapping up to be a repeat of the same lame-ass tactics every other candidate has used before. obama has definitely shown he has the most potential to bring about change to america, but i’m even beginning to wonder about that considering the state of the economy now.

and what about the joke that is mc cain and palin? serioiusly, how the fuck can people honestly support this team or believe half the shit they make up? if americans were truly paying attention at all, there’s no way in hell this election would be as close as it is. obama would be blowing mc cain away. palin is a major embarrassment and i hope the rest of the world is laughing their asses off because of the ignorance that runs rampant in this country. if mc cain wins, palin is a step away from president. president palin?! that should scare the hell out of each and every one of us.

i have told several people that if mc cain wins, i will be actively seeking canadian citizenship and residency. no longer can i live in a country full of bigots, hypocrits, religious fanatics, superficiality, or self-righteous idiots. people here are too passive about their rights, too comfortable in their own bubbles, and don’t give a shit about things that don’t affect their lives directly (although if they understood things, they would see in the end they do). so pending the results a month from now, i may or may not become canadian.

and then the first two debates not being as powerful as they should have been, especially the VP debate last night which seemed too scripted, boring and too nice. biden should have ripped palin a new one for being completely ignorant of any of the real issues, not answering the questions, and overall having a ridiculously unprofessional demeanor. biden knew his facts and how to debate, but he definitely was not as powerful or strong as he should have been. obama wasn’t either in his debate with mc cain. give me a break, if you’re passionate about becoming president and fixing this mess then i want to see some anger and emotion involved. enough games.

in addition to the election that has been rather disappointing recently, we have the housing and financial crisis. and this $700 billion bailout? wtf is that? seeing as how it has now passed both the house and the senate, signed into office, all of us will have to pay for the irreponsible banks and americans who got us in this mess in the first place. if you’re not extremely angered by this, you’re obviously NOT paying attention. when was the last time banks or the government bailed any of us out? yeah, never. needless to say, we, american taxpayers, don’t get a damn thing in return for paying for this mess. typical. so i guess we should all assume the position now…

the ground, which at one point as so sound and stable, is being quickly pulled out from under us. our rights continue to be taken away. our government continues to screw us over. we have to pay for their major blunders. our position in the world has become a joke. everything continues to get more and more expensive, yet our incomes and minimum wage remain stagnant. and now because of this damn bailout plan, the promises of obama as president will falter under lack of funding as we will be paying for wall street’s and banks’ ignorant mistakes.

i recall a year ago thinking things could not get any worse than where bush and his clan has taken us, but i was definitely wrong. when will people finally wake up and take a stand? when will people fight for the rights that are being taken away from them? when will people stand up against their government that continues to screw them over? america is a democracy? ha, far from it.
