whew! after a two-month hiatus, i’ve was finally able to get back into my mixes as most of june and july were consumed by work and the move from seattle to minneapolis. well, after being in minneapolis for three weeks now, it’s still been busy trying to get settled in and getting into a more typical “routine” of sorts while trying to do some personal projects on the side. “convergence” reflects my recent cross-country move, the seemingly parallel lives one experiences for a few weeks until they can close one chapter while getting a considerable push into the next. the move. the change. the challenge. as a result, i chose to select a wide variety of tracks for this mix whose release dates and memories span the duration from my beginnings in seattle up to my current, yet young, life in minneapolis. each track, for me, has a particular memory attached to it within this period of time. So there is some underlying structure amongst it’s seemingly chaotic mosaic of trance, progressive and dark minimal.

as always, enjoy the tracks.

just squeezed this mix in before the start of the new month. with the new job, the upcoming move this summer, and all of the doubt and uncertainty that comes with the future, while at the same time trying to wrap up ongoing things, life and my sanity have been all over the place–back and forth. that, combined with the lack of spring/early summer weather here in seattle this month has simply amplified that chaotic and bipolar feeling, which gave way to the title of this mix and the overall sound the tracks combine to create.

enjoy the tracks.

well finally… i’ve gotten around to putting together my very first mix! after playing around with ableton live 6 for the past year, version 7 has recently been released and i’ve decided to take the plunge and actually purchase it, which means i can output my own mixes. not sure what really inspired me today, perhaps it was the amazing hike in the olympic mountains yesterday that brought forth a tremendous amount of inspiration and creative motivation. anyway, i’ve had a few of these tracks in my head for the past few weeks which for me defines this summer, with a few other good summer tracks to throw in between.

Terminus, titled such as it marks the end of the summer finally, is a little “brighter” than much of what i listened to, but uplifting vocals work out well considering it’s still summer. you can definitely expect darker, less vocal and more progressive stuff as we transition into fall. the set starts off gradually at the beginning, but once it kicks in it’s constant throughout until the final track, which is a little darker than the others signaling the evolution of summer into fall.

enjoy! oh, and superurbia, which will essentially be the home of my mixes “sūp:urbia” and other creative output i happen to throw on there. eventually i will actually get some kind of site up, but that’s still somewhere on my long list of tasks

the events that unfolded over the past two weeks has definitely been difficult and exhausting to deal with and was quite a personal challenge for myself. thinking, reflection and contemplation were running about ten times higher than normal which has resulted in the realization of a lot of things that i now take with me, things that to an extent have made me much more an enlightened person.

now some people see enlightenment for sages and mystics, that it brings a person further away from reality and that enlightened people are above everyone, which is a completely false perception. enlightened people are just like everyone else. however, this article states that “Part of the problem is Enlightenment can mean many things. Bringing light to dark places, bringing clarity, and perceiving the truth are a few different interpretations. But ultimately, Enlightenment is understanding your true nature. It’s the realization that you are not a separate ego, you are the eternal, unbounded energy of the universe.” The same article explains that enlightenment helps you realize:

    * Death and birth are an illusion.
* Life is a dream with the brain awake.
* Beliefs are subjective. Something is only true if you believe it is.
* Life is essentially one, everything is consciousness.
* You are eternal and there is no reason to fear death, or anything for that matter. Essentially, if you are experiencing fear, there’s a bug in your consciousness.
* What you do to others, you are really doing to yourself.
* You know yourself through the difference of others, you perceive in others the reflection of yourself. i.e. if you think everyone else is an asshole, it just might be you.
* Because we are all one, compassion and love become the highest principles.

so in reality it means “living life more fully, passionately and fearlessly.” these are all characteristics which i have begun to see in my own life over the past year or two as my own personal growth evolves. in addition to those points above, there are also a series of agreements i have made with myself to recover my personal freedom again: using the power of my word to go with myself rather than against it; never taking anything anyone does or says personally; no longer make assumptions as it only creates a lot of unnecessary drama in the end (don’t assume others know what i’m thinking or how i feel), don’t believe myself and my inner voice of knowledge when that voice is used against me; and, listen to what other people have to say, but don’t believe what they tell me unless i feel they are speaking from their integrity.

i wouldn’t say i am totally enlightened, but definitely feel that with these ideas in mind that it is the direction i am heading towards in order to bring about a greater feeling of inner peace.

well the mt. rainier climb that we had tentatively scheduled for the end of this coming has been postponed until mid to late july unfortunately. the main reason is the weather forecast a few days ago was showing a pretty decent chance for rain and snow on rainier for wednesday and thursday with mostly cloudy conditions… not all that good for getting the best experience. additionally, everyone’s schedule this week is pretty hectic including my own since we planned the trip pretty quickly without allowing much time for more intense training. thus, i am not completely disappointed (except i was at first!) as i would much rather climb when the weather is clearer.

josue, jesse and myself were able to get a training hike in at mt. si this past wednesday which was awesome… especially considering the weather finally cooperated. i ended up with some pretty major blisters on the heels of my feet once we reached the top after a poor choice in socks selection, the pain of which i am still dealing with today. whatever, it was definitely worth it. i took some photos and video from the top.

i’ve been talking about getting climb scheduled to summit mt. rainier this summer, which will probably be one of the greatest physical and mental challenges i’ve had in a while and is well over due. earlier this year i began to question its feasibility after attending at ‘prep for rainier’ seminar at rei back in march. the main reason for doubt–the cost involved with obtaining the equipment and getting the proper guide to take you up there. there’s no way in hell i would venture up there alone or with friends who have never climbed it at least several times! luckily i have two friends who have also been wanting to summit it and we’ve had ongoing casual discussions about getting the climb setup for this summer. nothing was ever firmly set in place though, which increased my doubt. however, i later learned that they had a friend who was a guide for climbs on mt rainier and offered to take us up there! woohoo!

so i ran into my friends again at a bar one night where we talked about the climb, you know since we are already in june and summer is here (although it doesn’t feel or look like it here in seattle). they were meeting with the guide one day the following week to discuss the potential trip and try to get some dates setup for the best times to go. i was stoked, and told them to let me know what information they gather from the guide afterwards. this was probably two weeks ago. then, the other afternoon (monday i believe) i was sitting here working… you know just the typical buzz of work. suddenly an email came in through my inbox titled “Rainier”. oh my god, it was good news. basically it was information my friend forwarded to me from the guide regarding scheduling of the climb etc.

but when, you ask? we have a tentative date set for june 25-27th (takes about 3 days to climb up to the summit and get back down) which means we need to get our asses in gear and start doing some more intense hikes near seattle with weighted packs. i’m not really concerned about conditioning or training for rainier as we’re all in good shape and do a lot of cardio, so endurance should not be an issue (well, until we reach the higher altitudes with less oxygen). from what i’ve heard, the thing that gets most people is having to carry all of that weight on their backs which should amount to less than 50 lbs if you pack appropriately. usually it’s closer to 35-40 lbs. so now we need just need to schedule some climbs with our packs weighed down either on the weekends or after work since there are so many great possibilities near seattle.

we won’t know for sure if our climb will take place later this month until we get closer to the start date and observe the weather forecasts. three climbers where stranded yesterday, one of which died, when the strong late season spring storm blew through with blizzard conditions and 70+ mph winds on the mountain. we don’t want that to happen! if the weather turns nasty during our planned dates, then we will move the climb to mid-july sometime.

i’m totally excited, and i can’t help but think about and anticipate the trip!

some info:

Mount Rainier is a stratovolcano in Pierce County, Washington, located 54 miles southeast of Seattle, Washington, in the United States. It is the highest peak in the Cascade Range, with a topographical summit of 14,411 feet. The mountain and the surrounding area comprise Mount Rainier National Park. With 26 major glaciers, Mount Rainier is the most heavily glaciated peak in the lower 48 states at 35 square miles of snow and glaciers. Heat from the volcano keeps areas of the crater rim on its summit cone mostly free of snow and ice. The geothermal heat has also caused the formation of glacier caves in the twin summit craters.

Mount Rainier was originally known as Talol or Tahoma (not to be confused with Tacoma), from the Puyallup word tÉ™qʷúʔbəʔ (”mother of waters”). It has a topographic prominence of 13,211 feet, greater than that of K2. It can be seen prominently to the south from most of the Seattle Metropolitan Area. On clear days, it can also be seen from as far away as Portland, Oregon. Because of its scenic dominance, Seattle/Tacoma-area residents often refer to it simply as “the Mountain.”

Mountain climbing on Mount Rainier is difficult; it includes climbing on the largest glaciers in the U.S. south of Alaska. Most climbers require two to three days to reach the summit. Climbing teams require experience in glacier travel, self-rescue, and wilderness travel. About 8,000 – 13,000 people attempt the climb each year, about 90% via routes from Camp Muir on the southwest flank. Most of the rest ascend Emmons Glacier via Camp Schurman on the northeast. About half of the attempts are successful, with weather and conditioning being the most common reasons for failure. About three mountaineering deaths each year occur due to rock and ice fall, avalanche, falls, and hypothermia associated with severe weather.
