job hunting

in my push to find a job in nyc beginning this fall, i sent out my resume and portfolio to three firms over the last couple of days, only one of which dealt with architecture. on friday, i sent stuff out to pentagram and magnani caruso dutton in hopes of getting some type of response back over the next week (not holding my breath).

pentagram i really like because not only do they do architecture, they also expand their design into all design fields… from architecture and interiors to graphic and industrial/product design. i think i would enjoy such an environment much more than working for a firm that solely focused on architecture since i am passionate about multiple design fields.

magnani caruso dutton i chose because they had posted several job positions on newstoday, including the positions of a flash designer/developer and web/graphic designer that i applied for. also, they have quite a prestigious list of large clients as well as what looks to be a great work environment.

then yesterday i sent my stuff out to fantasy interactive in new york as they are looking for flash designers and interactive developers. i really like this firm the best out of the three i sent my stuff to as they have done some really nice web applications and one can tell they are very passionate about the internet, design and the technology that allows them to push the internet beyond its current state. after sending out my email to them, i get an automated response email stating that those who move on to be interviewed must complete a test in either design or interactive, and the tests take about a week each to complete. they provided the urls for their tests so of course i looked them over. the design test has a series of small design projects to take on such as redesigning the apple.com home page, designing a new logo for their company, and a few others. they basically want to see if you can creatively and accurately depict a company’s identity and capture that identity through design. for the interactive test, i am required to do some flash work with actionscript to develop an interactive menu, design a series of desktop icons, and something else. here they want to know if you are able to create usable and informative graphics simply, creatively and accurately.

out of the three, i would absolutely love to work for fantasy interactive as i appreciate their drive to push the limits with what can be done on the internet. they developed the time warner flash site which is really awesome, not to mention their company site is sweet as well. for this job, though, i am definitely not holding my breath as i don’t even have a degree in graphic design… not sure how they will respond to an architecture degree holder. i just hope i hear back something, positive or negative, sometime soon…
