each year i find myself getting more and more frustrated (perhaps angered) with the holiday season as i fail to fully understand exactly WHY!? this season is nothing but hysterical consumption and consumerism and i find the whole ritual increasingly bizarre and meaningless. for those who actually take part in this yearly absurdity, you often find yourselves stressed out due to administrative drain where all you’re doing is shelling out loads of money with no REAL meaning behind the gifts. you feel obligated to participate even if you don’t want to or else the rest of your family (or society for that matter) will look at you as some type of scrooge… as if there’s something wrong with you rather than those who actually participate. you end up getting more material crap that you don’t really need or really use beyond the first week of newness that comes with your ‘perfect’ gift. also annoying is the fact that if you wait one or two days AFTER xmas, everything goes on sale on your money will go twice as far as it did prior to the holiday.
you seeing how ridiculous this all is yet?
if you want to understand the full repulsive nature of christmas, do what i do and remain on the sidelines and observe. observe the angry shoppers, the crowded stores, the hours of waiting in line, the frustrations of finding that ‘perfect’ gift, fighting over the closest parking spot, the financial burdens, the stress, the depression, and the overall disgust… characteristics demonstrated by celebratory and festive people. i don’t celebrate this dreaded holiday and i could not be any more better off… i’m totally stress-free!
instead of buying useless crap that we don’t need… our family members and friends don’t need… why don’t we just donate our money to a better cause? most of us are luckly to have our family and friends… shouldn’t that be enough? why the gifts? why the stress and depression? do all those new material possessions really make you happy? think about those who are less fortunate as that is the true spirit of christmas… not the damn consumerism that has run rampant like a fatal disease infiltrating throughout society and plaguing us all. here we have starving people on our streets and we are fighting over the last PS2 that’s on sale, trampling people down to reach the best store bargains, and running all over town to find that gift that every other store you have been to is sold out of.
so next time you are standing in a long checkout line, forking out hundreds of dollars, sitting in shopping mall traffic, and stressing over juggling your unnecessary holiday obligations with your real life (work, family, ect)… think about this… is it REALLY worth it?
