strike!

closed streets, crowded sidewalks, congested traffic… that was the scene today as the nyc transit system has been completely shut down as a result of the transportation workers union strike against the mta. apparently 7 million people use some form of mass transit daily in nyc, so the shut down of buses and subways have really put a damper on daily commuting and simply getting around. luckily it doesn’t really affect me since i walk everywhere anyway and live in lower manhattan. however, not so for some of my co-workers who live in brooklyn or farther uptown. i do support the workers’ decision to strike as i am strongly in favor of acting against supressive or unfair treatment. if you are being ousted or treated unfairly in whatever way, then you should definitely have a strong voice against it and submit to large scale action if need be. in this sense, i feel the workers have taken the proper action, but unfortunately it happens to fall during the holiday when people are needing to get around even more. though, i don’t think the strike will last very long… probably not through christmas. we shall see…
