why is it that everyone around me tells me that i work too hard and too much? am i really? or rather, is it the fact that they are all slackers and couldn’t fathom working the hours i do? i agree… i do work a lot: full time day job from 8am – 630pm and then freelance work at night until 2am (or longer) plus all weekends (except a few here and there to take a break). so what? i am doing what i enjoy… i’m driven by working all the time and keeping myself busy. who needs downtime? sleep is overrated.
but isn’t that all part of the design profession? this stuff always takes longer than you could have imagined, but if you are in this industry then shouldn’t it be something you enjoy doing?
even fellow designers have similar schedules when asked how much they work per day/week (from fellow newstoday.com members):
fulltime weekday position and freelancing when i get home inc weekends. i live for this shit!
8am-5pm — 8pm-12am 5 days a week. 8pm-12am weekends. no rest and no choice.
I am working every hour god sends at the mo. about 9am – 0000, last night was until 0400 but I am freelancing. And yes I work weekends as well :/
Most of the other guys i work with do 10am-10pm, plus occasional weekends. Small agency, trying to make it, yadda yadda. On the upside, even our account guy stays late most nights.
60+ hours per week. 7 days between my 9-5 and freelance.
that’s what freelance work is all about. i still would rather continue freelance (including the long hours) rather than having a normal office job working for “the man” like the majority… and hating every minute of my life there:
8.00 – 4.30
normal office hours.
fucking sick of it.
3 hours travel each day.
Pain in the fucking arse.
is it really necessary to go out every night or nearly every night if your “job” consists of that which you enjoy and you are not burned out? i don’t think so… so don’t criticize… a highly active social life is not as important as you think!
