with the days growing shorter and my list of goals growing longer, i can’t help but ask about this manufactured concept. what if there were not clocks… no days… no months nor years? would ‘time’ still seem to pass as quickly? why is it that when you get older time tends to speed up? is it because you are more aware of ‘time’ or simply because your life is controlled by it? just the fact that it does not have a single definition leads me to question the true reality of it.
even aristotle had similar contemplations in which he concluded that time is NOT change in and of itself because a change may be faster or slower, but never time and that time is not related to motion. descartes held a similar belief where time is a divine process of re-creation… or change. however i most relate to kant’s definition of time–our mind structure our perceptions “so that space always has a Euclidean geometry, and time has the structure of the mathematical line.” it seems that we have no real direct perception of time but only the ability to experience things and events within time.
anyway… i find it facinating that we are so commanded by something we don’t really understand (or know if it exists… but in this sense time is not the only concept that falls within this realm).
